What is “Give a Life”?
“Give a Life” is a Saudi national campaign aimed to increase public awareness about the idea of organ donation.
Who are us?
This activity is conducted by the Standing Committee on Humanity and Peace (SCORP), a committee of the International Federation of Medical Student Associations - Saudi Arabia (IFMSA-SA), in cooperation with Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) and “Yalla Banat Riyadh” Group.
What organs can be transplanted?
kidneys, heart, lungs, liver, pancreas, and corneas.
Who decides who will receive donated organs?
The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation matches donated organs with critically ill patients on the national waiting list. Medical urgency, compatibility of blood chemistries, and body size are considerations in making the match.
Will I receive less aggressive medical treatment because I am willing to be a donor?
No. Your own physicians will do everything possible to save your life. Only after they determined that further efforts would be futile, the transplant team becomes involved.
What if members of my family oppose donation?
The best way to ensure your wishes are carried out, is to tell your family how strongly you feel about being an organ and tissue donor. You also should sign and carry a donor card, and record your wishes in legal documents.
Does organ donation leave the body disfigured?
Donation does not change the appearance of the body for the funeral service.
How much will organ donation cost my family?
Nothing. All costs related to donation are paid by recipients and their health insurance. Your family pays only for the medical care provided before death and funeral expenses.
Are there religious objections to organ and tissue donation?
Most major religions in the world support donation as a gift of life to fellow human beings.
What does Islam say about organ donation?
The Supreme Council of `Ulama in Riyadh (in their resolution no. 99 dated 6 Dhul Qi'dah 1402) has allowed both organ donation and organ transplantation in the case of necessity. The organ can be taken from the body of a living person with his consent and also from the body of a dead person.
When You've made the decision of becoming an organ donor, here is what To Do:
Sign the organ donor card (you can get it from our exhibitions or SCOT or any renal dialysis unit, or just call this free number 8001245500), and carry it in your wallet or purse at all times. Tell your family members that you have decided to become an organ donor so they will understand your wishes and you will be able to give a life.
